The Adrenal Cocktail–otherwise known as the “dreamsicle” because of its DELICIOUS taste–has become a staple in the women’s holistic health world.

This is because this simple drink supports optimum hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis health, hormone balance, and blood sugar regulation.

All that for drinking something super delicious? Yes please!

The Original Recipe

Megan learned about the Adrenal Cocktail from her then-mentor Christa at The Whole Journey. Her recipe is a slightly modified version of the traditional Adrenal Cocktail (the original recipe is orange juice, cream of tarter & Himalayan pink salt).

You can find her recipe here…and you’ll want to check it out before you dig into our variations for it.

The Benefits of the Adrenal Cocktail

When both of us were in the depleted phase of adrenal and HPA dysfunction, this dreamsicle saved us!

We both drank the Adrenal Cocktail every morning for several months at a time while we were initially working on balancing our hormones.

The most notable differences we see when we drink this daily is HUGE increase in our energy levels and the ability to finally regulate our blood sugar levels throughout the day.

We’ve both found that with it, we don’t experience mid afternoon crashes or sugar cravings like we used to. So long, Swedish Fish fix that keeps calling our name!

This is also a recipe we come back to when something happens in our lives that impacts our hormonal levels (think postpartum, stressful times, and sleep changes).

Here’s a breakdown of how each ingredient helps:

  • Fresh squeezed OJ gives liver the glucose it needs to regenerate
  • Perfect balance of fat/carb/protein ratio for adrenal health and blood sugar balancing
  • Collagen is loaded with the amino acids and building blocks for health
  • Himalayan pink salt has 84 essential minerals that the adrenals need to function properly (very different from iodized table salt)

The Anti-Inflammatory Adrenal Cocktail Variation

This one tastes like a cherry creamsicle!

And works amazingly for people dealing with inflammation…whether that’s from a systemic inflammatory condition (like rheumatoid arthritis) or something more straightforward, like exercise.

  • 1-2 tbsp tart cherry concentrate
  • 4-6 oz filtered water
  • 2 tbsp raw cream or coconut cream
  • 1 tbsp grass fed collagen peptides
  • As much Himalayan pink salt as you can stand

The Detoxification Support Adrenal Cocktail Variation

Some ladies can’t do sweet fruit juices for a variety of reasons but poor detoxification is a common one that we see often.

This variation uses green juice and liquid chlorophyll to support natural detoxification in the liver, kidneys, and colon.

Learn more about when to focus on detoxification in your cycle here.

  • 4-6 oz raw green juice (such as the Evolve brand ones or you can make your own at home)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon liquid chlorophyll
  • 2 tbsp raw cream or coconut cream
  • 1 tbsp grass fed collagen peptides
  • As much Himalayan pink salt as you can stand

Side note: pregnant or breastfeeding mamas should not do this one.

The Caveat: The Adrenal Cocktail Might Not Be For Everyone.

You always need to consider your personal situation when implementing a dietary or lifestyle change. We have had clients try the cocktail and feel horrible because of an issue with bacterial overgrowth!!

Just because something is popular on the internet and works for many of us, doesn’t mean that it is a good fit for you. LISTEN to your body first and foremost!

What Else Can I Do?

Drinking a daily creamsicle is just one of the many life changes that we made in our hormone healing journeys and these recipes are by no means a quick fix for your adrenal glands, though it will support you.

If you have been diagnosed with HPA Dysfunction, don’t stop there.  Start digging for the root cause.

What caused the imbalance?

HPA Dysfunction is an imbalance of hormones and signaling molecules.

The problem is very rarely actually the adrenal gland itself, but instead there can be a breakdown anywhere in a complex relationship between the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis…and the ovaries, the blood sugar regulation cascade, as well as the gut.

Anything that helps “restore the adrenals” is really just a way of helping to balance hormones and blood sugar, and therefore puts let stress on the thyroid, detoxification and every other function in the body.

In the meantime, while you are doing the deeper work, you can replenish your body with this cocktail.
