Magnesium is an amazing little substance. It can help you with sleep, gut motility, the assimilation and utilization of nutrients, and close to 300 other tasks in the body! Unfortunately, lots of people are magnesium deficient. This is because many aspects of modern life overtax the magnesium supply in the body: high sugar, nutrient poor diets, chronic exercise, and lack of sleep all play a role.
Getting magnesium from food sources is, as always, a great idea. Unfortunately, poor gut health can mean less than optimal magnesium absorption from food sources, making it a bit of a Catch 22 in terms of becoming magnesium sufficient. Luckily for us, you can absorb magnesium through your skin in the form of epsom salt baths (magnesium sulfate) and magnesium oil (in our case, magnesium chloride…there are others in a commercially available magnesium oil).
To be entirely honest, this form of magnesium spray is less readily absorbable through the skin than commercially made magnesium oils but they usually run around $15 a bottle while this one costs about a dollar per batch. While I cerebrally know that this spray isn’t as potent, I have never noticed a difference in outcome. Case in point: I have never not fallen asleep within 30 minutes of spraying it on at night. Not bad at all for a measly dollar a bottle, right?

Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Magnesium flakes
- 2/3 cup distilled water
- 10-15 drops lavender essential oil (optional but great for relaxation and helping you fall asleep at night)
Steps:
1. Boil your water.
2. Place magnesium flakes in a mixing jar or bowl and pour over with your hot water.
3. Mix well until magnesium flakes have dissolved.
4. Let cool to about room temperature.
5. Add in the lavender essential oil drops and mix.
6. Decant into spray bottle.
Shake before each use and spray over abdomen, legs, and feet about half an hour before desired bedtime. I use about 20 sprays or so each day. I sometimes use it not at bedtime on days when I’ve gotten really stressed out and need to relax; at these times I only use around 8-10 sprays.
I’ve never had anything happen to/grow in this spray before I used it all but if you’re nervous, it’s perfectly ok to keep it in the fridge.
