Because I work in a hospital, I’m always being exposed to an inordinate amount of germs, especially of the cold variety. And unfortunately, because I work in a hospital, it’s fairly difficult to take time off when you’re sick.
As a result, I generally bend over backwards to avoid and actively prevent the onset of cold and flu-type symptoms. Over the years, I’ve come up with several go-to home remedies that I believe really work for me (yes, I’m fully aware of the placebo effect and I have absolutely no problem in using it to my benefit).
This recipe is what I reach for when I start to feel any sort of discomfort/scratchy-ness in the back of my throat or when I start to cough. I do it up to 3 times per day the second I start to feel symptoms and, in my personal experience, it generally helps me from developing the full blown version of whatever was brewing.

- 1 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon salt (while I love my Redmond’s Real Salt for almost everything, I use regular table salt for this recipe)
- 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 8 drops Oregano Oil
- 5 drops Tea Tree Oil
1. Place your warm water into a large mug.
2. Add in your salt and baking soda, then stir until dissolved.
3. Add in your oregano oil and tea tree oil and mix thoroughly. (The oil will not want to mix with the water so you may have to stir several times throughout the process.)
I use this recipe most often as a gargle but I’ve also had quite a bit of success when I’ve used it in a Neti Pot.
